How Well Is Your Septic System Working?

Want to know more about your septic system? If your question does not appear here, please email us or call us today for an appointment - our knowledgeable technicians are happy to answer your questions.

How often should a septic system be cleaned?
It depends. As a general rule, we recommend that it be pumped out every 2 to 3 years for a family of 4. However, every family is different and your exact needs may vary based on water usage, laundry detergents and cleaning products used, and the type of toilet tissue used. Failure to properly maintain your system could cause major problems that could cost you thousands in repairs and replacements.

What causes the thick crust to form in my septic tank?
The crusting is organic material that has congealed into a solid mass. This condition is dangerous and indicates a bacterial deficiency. Your tank needs to be pumped and you should consult one of our technicians as to what has caused the deficiency and what you can do to prevent it in the future.

My system recently backed up for the first time in years. Why should I start maintaining it now?
A backup is the first sign of septic system failure. You will be lucky to go another six months without another backup. If you don't begin a maintenance program right away, you will be replacing your system soon.

What are the signs of system failure?
Typical signs of system failure are sluggish drains, plumbing backups, gurgling in your pipes/drains, outdoor odor, and mushy ground or greener grass in the area near your system.

Is there anything that I can't put into my system?
Yes! Do not put items down drains that may clog the pipes or septic tank such as fats, grease, coffee grounds, paper towels, sanitary napkins, condoms, tampons, or disposable diapers. Do not put toxic substances such as solvents, degreasers, acids, oils, paints, disinfectants, or pesticides in drains. Normal household cleaning chemicals, when used in moderation, should not affect the system.

If I have an aerator, how do I service it?
General maintenance includes cleaning the shaft of the aerator of hair and debris every 6 months and pumping out the tank on a regular basis. We offer a maintenance contract in which we will come and clean off the shaft and do a thorough check up on your system every 6 months.

What is involved in a tank pumping and cleaning?
For an aeration system, all three chambers should be pumped and cleaned. If an upflow filter is present, which is usually indicated by 2 large square concrete lids after the third aeration lid, it should be pumped and cleaned and the gravel raked and flushed with clean water so that proper filtering can take place.
